Becoming a Youth Court juror couldn't be easier. You just have to live in the
Town of Bethlehem and be in grades 8 through 12. There are no mandated
number of cases to attend and you can volunteer to sit on juries as your
schedule allows. You do need to submit the form below (you will need to be
able to view pdfs) to the Youth Court office. Youth Court hearings are held
on two Thursday evenings each month. Prior to the hearing, you will
receive an email requesting that all jurors who are available respond to the
email regarding what case time they prefer for the night of the hearing. A
few days before the hearing, assignments will be made and emailed to the
jurors.
In order to ensure all jurors who wish to participate are given the chance to,
jurors are placed on a rotating schedule based on response rate to the hearing
date/time.
As a juror, no prior training is required. If you are placed on a jury, you will
be asked to arrive about 15 minutes before the case starts, read and sign off
on an Oath of Confidentiality and disclose to the jury foreperson if you have
any (either positive or negative) relationship with the offender. You will be
then directed by the judge to listen intently to the facts as they are presented
at the hearing. You and your fellow jurors will be led in your deliberations by
the jury foreperson and will determine an appropriate sentence for the young
offender. Community service, apology letters, educational classes, and a turn
on another jury are sentencing options.
If becoming a BYC juror is what you would like to do, download the
following form (you do need to be able to view pdfs), print it out, and return
it to the BYC office. If you are unable to download the form, email
byc261@yahoo.com and request a form to be e-mailed or mailed to you.
Thanks for volunteering!!!
